Scarpa "La Selva di Moirano" 100% Brachetto, Piedmonte Italy
Practicing organic, hand harvested, native yeast fermentation, minimal intervention.
Wow. This is special. Brachetto, traditionally a sparkling dessert wine, is made dry and still. It spends a year in stainless steel tanks and then another 2 in the bottle before release. Just a total unicorn of a wine from one of the most respected houses in Piemonte.
The aromatics are incredible on this one. Right off the bat we get dried florals- jasmine and rose, a real potpourri- think hugs from your grandma or favorite aunt. Then the fruit starts to develop- cherry pie filling and toasted sugar, and a hint of vegetal, tomato vine undercurrent. A real journey. The palate is also, of course, a delight. Zippy acidity and gentle but grippy tannins- we get candied cherries and what I can only assume rubies taste like. You can pair this with light fare but honestly I think it's wonderful all on its own.
